Fault line card with Sunrise Sailing bundle and Beautiful Gallery designer series paper by Stampin' Up!®

I love a technique that makes an easy WOW card. The fault line technique is simple and stunning.

This simple tearing technique is created by tearing the layers and the card front at the same time. This leaves a jagged edge like the front of your card ripped apart. The patterned paper or embossed layer underneath peeks through. The torn layers are off-set and then glued together. This creates a unique look on the inside of your card too. The backside of the paper is visible when you open the card. You can keep it simple with just a greeting or add some layered die cuts. On the sailboat card, I used two layers with my torn card front instead of one. It gives a bold color to separate the blue (secret sea) from the teals (pretty peacock and pool party).

Products used on the sailboat card:
  • Sunrise Sailing bundle (stamps, dies and hybrid embossing folder)
  • Classic ink pads: Secret Sea, Lemon Lime Twist and Pool Party
  • Two-toned cardstocks: Pretty Peacock and Pool Party
  • Cardstock: Basic White, Secret Sea and Lemon Lime Twist
  • multipurpose liquid glue and stampin' dimensionals
  • Stylish Shapes large square die
Instructions:
  1. Cut card base 4 1/4" x 11", score at 5 1/2"
  2. Cut layers (Pretty Peacock and Lemon Lime Twist) 5 1/2" x 4 1/4"
  3. Cut dsp or layer to emboss 5 1/2" x 4 1/4"
  4. Stack layers to be torn with card front behind the front flap. Tear the pieces. You can tear it any way you like but try not to go below the middle of the card.
  5. Separate the torn layers. Off-set the top card layer and the layers underneath so each color peeks out from the layer on top. Add glue along the torn edge of the bottom torn layer. Adhere to the full dsp or embossed layer. (this layer isn't adhered yet!)  I leave about 1/16" or 1/8" space between the top of the full layer and the card fold. This helps it open and close better. **see video
  6. Continue to glue down the torn layers. Adhere the next layer (lemon lime twist) to the first layer. It is off-set to show some of the pretty peacock.
  7. Then add glue to the card front. Don't put adhesive all the way to the top as we left that little gap where it meets the embossed or dsp layer. Press the layers together to adhere it completely together.
  8. Use the piece you torn off to create the bottom of the card front. The layers are off-set just like the top.
  9. Adhere the cardstock (original card base) layer to the next layer (lemon lime twist). Put adhesive only along the torn edge.
  10. Adhere that layer to the next torn layer (pretty peacock) the same way.
  11. Adhere this layer to the bottom of the embossed or dsp layer. Only glue along the torn edge.
  12. Use trimmer to trim the excess paper off the bottom. You can use these pieces inside or on another project.
  13. Add more glue to the layers at the bottom to secure the layers.
  14. Embellish with die cuts or a greeting
  15. Add a Basic White piece 5 1/4" x 4" to the inside for your message. Decorate it or leave it blank.
If you don't like that look, you can tear the layers together, glue those to the full layer that peeks through and then adhere that to the cardbase. Either way it creates a beautiful card. The boat scene (Beautiful Gallery paper) card has very little stamping and the simple design allows the beautiful paper to be center stage. You can make your cards landscape or portrait. I loved the landscape orientation for my patterned scene paper so I could see more of the scene.

Products used on the boat scene card:
  • Beautiful Gallery designer series paper
  • Sunrise Sailing stamp set
  • Beautiful Motifs stamp set
  • Two-Toned cardstocks: Secret Sea and Crumb Cake
  • Cardstock: Secret Sea and Basic White (inside)
  • Classic ink pad: Secret Sea
  • multipurpose liquid glue
Instructions:
  1. Cut card base 4 1/4" x 11", score at 5 1/2"
  2. Cut cardstock layers (two-toned) 5 1/2" x 4 1/4"
  3. Cut patterned paper 5 1/2" x 4 1/4"
  4. Cut inside basic white layer 5 1/4" x 4"
  5. Stack two-toned cardstocks together and tear at the same time. Offset the bottom layer from the top so it is peeking out from under it.
  6. Adhere bottom torn layer (crumb cake) to dsp layer.
  7. Adhere top torn layer (secret sea) on top of torn layer (crumb cake). Off-set the layer to show as much of the bottom torn layer you want to see.
  8. Take the bottom torn pieces and adhere the top torn layer to the bottom layer. Offset it the same way you did for the top. Only put adhesive along the torn edge.
  9. Adhere this piece to the dsp layer to create the bottom of your card front. ** see video
  10. Use trimmer to trim excess paper off the bottom.
  11. Adhere the layer to your card base.
  12. Stamp greeting on a two-toned crumb cake cardstock scrap and tear the edges.
  13. Embellish the inside layer with torn strips to match the front or leave blank.

Check out the embossed layer of the sailboat card up-close. It gives a fun texture to the card and the texture is visible on the inside of the card.

Here's an up-close look at the edges on the boat scene card. I tore the two-toned cardstock layers (secret sea and crumb cake) and then adhered them onto my patterned paper layer. Then it is adhered to the card front.
